The S1 Pro Sport will join the brand’s existing portfolio that currently includes the S1 scooter and the Roadster motorcycle. Deliveries of the S1 Pro Sport are expected to commence in January 2026.

The Ola S1 Pro Sport is positioned as a performance-oriented variant of the S1 scooter. It is equipped with a 16kW motor paired with a 5.2 kWh battery powered by the company’s in-house developed 4680 Bharat Cell. This enables the scooter to achieve a top speed of 152 kmph and an acceleration of 0 to 40 kmph in just 2 seconds.

On a single charge, the scooter offers an impressive range of up to 320 km (IDC), placing it among the top long-range scooters in the Indian EV market.

The S1 Pro Sport is engineered to deliver a dynamic and stable riding experience. Key enhancements include:

Indigenous Ferrite Motor: A Step Towards Supply Chain Independence

The move is aimed at reducing dependency on rare-earth magnets, which are crucial for EV powertrains but are largely controlled by China, posing supply chain risks for the global automotive industry.

Global Rare-Earth Supply Chain Challenges

Rare-earth magnets are favored in the auto industry due to their compact size and high efficiency. However, China dominates the supply chain, producing around 60% of the world’s rare-earth elements and controlling nearly 90% of global refining capacity.

In April 2025, China introduced stricter export regulations on rare-earth materials, requiring special permits, which has already begun disrupting EV and auto component production worldwide. By developing rare-earth-free technologies, Ola Electric aims to safeguard its supply chain and contribute to India’s EV self-reliance.

Industry Response to Rare-Earth Alternatives

The global auto component industry is also exploring alternatives to rare-earth magnets. Companies such as Mahle, Valeo, Sterling Gtake, Sona Comstar, Greaves Cotton, Chara Technologies, and Attron Automotive are actively researching solutions for rare-earth-free motors.

However, experts caution that these technologies face challenges such as lower power density, reduced efficiency, and larger motor size and weight. For high-performance EV applications, large-scale commercial adoption may still take time.
