The Government of India has made legal assistance easier to access by bringing its Nyaya Setu platform to WhatsApp. Citizens can now get legal guidance, information, and support directly through a simple chat, without needing to visit legal offices or navigate complex procedures.
The Government of India has taken a significant step to make legal assistance more accessible to ordinary citizens by integrating Nyaya Setu, its digital legal guidance platform, with WhatsApp. Announced by the Ministry of Law and Justice, this initiative allows users to seek legal information and support directly through one of the country’s most widely used messaging apps.
Originally launched in August 2024, Nyaya Setu was designed to simplify access to legal support without having to navigate lengthy and often intimidating bureaucratic processes. The platform provides timely information and guidance, helping citizens understand legal rights and options without repeated visits to legal offices.
With its integration into WhatsApp, the government aims to make legal assistance more inclusive and user-friendly, especially for those who may be hesitant to approach formal legal institutions.
The Ministry of Law and Justice announced the WhatsApp integration on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting that the move “ensures that professional legal assistance is always swift and accessible for every citizen.” Leveraging WhatsApp’s massive reach across demographics, the initiative hopes to bridge the gap between legal resources and everyday users.
To use Nyaya Setu on WhatsApp:
Open WhatsApp
Message 7217711814
The contact appears as “Tele-Law” within the chat app.
Once connected, users are presented with a menu that includes:
Legal Advice
Legal Information
Legal Assistance
The chatbot then guides users step by step through the process.
After initiating the chat, the Nyaya Setu chatbot prompts users to verify their mobile number. Successful verification helps customize guidance and ensures more accurate service.
Note: During early testing, some users experienced an error at the verification stage. However, even without complete verification, users are currently still able to access legal information and assistance.
The chatbot’s interactive design ensures that even users unfamiliar with legal terminology can navigate the system easily.
While Nyaya Setu provides a first point of contact for legal queries, it is not a substitute for formal legal representation. Instead, the service is intended to offer:
Clear legal explanations
Steps for common legal inquiries
Basic guidance on rights and procedures
This makes the system particularly helpful for initial clarification and early legal support.
The Nyaya Setu WhatsApp chatbot is available to all WhatsApp users in India across:
Android phones
iOS devices
WhatsApp Web
This ensures broad accessibility regardless of device type.
The WhatsApp rollout reinforces the government’s push toward digital governance and citizen-centric services. By meeting citizens where they already are — in their everyday messaging app — the initiative has the potential to boost legal awareness and empower millions with accessible legal support.
If implemented smoothly and scaled effectively, Nyaya Setu on WhatsApp could become a key tool in ensuring legal guidance is just a message away for people across India.
