Meta is exploring the launch of a standalone smartphone app for its AI-generated video feed Vibes, signalling a potential expansion of its AI-first content strategy. The company confirmed the development to TechCrunch, noting that the move follows encouraging early engagement trends within the Meta AI app.
Launched in September last year, Vibes currently exists as a feature inside Meta AI, where users can create, remix, and browse short videos generated entirely using artificial intelligence.
Vibes is an AI-driven short-video feed that visually resembles platforms such as TikTok and Instagram Reels—but with a key difference.
Every video is AI-generated or AI-remixed
No user-recorded clips are required
Videos are created using Meta’s proprietary AI tools
Users can generate videos from scratch or remix AI-created clips already appearing in their feed, making Vibes a fully synthetic content ecosystem.
Until now, Vibes has only been accessible through the Meta AI app. According to the report, Meta is evaluating whether the feature can succeed as an independent app.
In a statement shared with TechCrunch, Meta said it has observed growing interest in AI-generated video creation and sharing. The company believes a standalone app could provide a more focused and immersive environment for this kind of content.
While Meta did not disclose specific usage figures, it confirmed that engagement with Meta AI has increased since launch—suggesting Vibes could attract enough users to function independently.
If launched separately, Vibes would compete more directly with OpenAI’s Sora, which also combines AI video generation with a social discovery feed.
Vibes focuses on short-form, remixable AI videos
Strong integration with Instagram and Facebook
Emphasis on social sharing, not just content creation
Meta appears to be positioning Vibes as both a creative tool and a social platform, rather than a standalone video generator.
Users can:
Generate videos using AI prompts
Remix existing AI videos
Edit visuals and styles
Add music before publishing
Finished videos can be:
Posted directly to the Vibes feed
Sent via direct messages
Cross-posted to Instagram Stories, Instagram Reels, and Facebook
According to the report, Meta noted that sharing is becoming a central behaviour, with many AI videos being sent privately to friends—similar to how users interact with Instagram Reels.
The test comes as Meta looks to monetise its AI offerings more aggressively.
Meta recently confirmed to TechCrunch that it is exploring premium subscriptions across:
AI features are expected to play a role in these plans.
Although Vibes is currently free, Meta reportedly plans to test a subscription-based model, where:
Free users get limited AI video creation access
Subscribers unlock additional AI video creation tools each month
These subscription tests are expected to begin in the coming months.
Meta says it plans to expand Vibes further based on user feedback. While there is no confirmed launch timeline for a standalone app yet, the ongoing testing indicates that Meta sees long-term potential in AI-generated social video.
Meta’s Vibes is evolving from a built-in feature to a possible standalone AI video platform. With rising engagement, social-first sharing behaviour, and upcoming subscription plans, Vibes could become Meta’s most ambitious AI content product yet—placing it squarely in competition with OpenAI’s Sora and reshaping how AI-generated video is consumed and shared.
