Powertrain: Unmatched Axial Flux Motor Technology

At the core of the AMG GT XX Concept is a trio of axial flux motors developed in collaboration with UK-based YASA, a subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz. Two motors power the rear axle, while one drives the front. Together, they deliver over 1,000kW (or 1,360bhp), enabling a top speed of over 360kmph.

Axial flux motors stand out for being three times more power-dense, two-thirds lighter, and occupying just a third of the space compared to conventional radial flux motors. The rear High Performance Electric Drive Unit (HP.EDU) combines dual oil-cooled motors with a planetary gearset and advanced silicon carbide inverters. The front HP.EDU uses a single motor with a spur-gear transmission and includes a disconnect unit (DCU) that disengages the front motor during steady-state driving to maximize efficiency.

The car’s AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system ensures precise, fully variable torque distribution for outstanding grip and dynamic handling.

Battery and Charging: Game-Changing Technology

The High Performance Electric Battery (HP.EB) of the GT XX draws on innovations inspired by the AMG ONE hypercar and Formula 1 technology. The battery packs tall, slim cylindrical cells with NCMA (nickel, cobalt, manganese, aluminum) chemistry and silicon anodes, offering an impressive 300 Wh/kg energy density.

A direct oil cooling system keeps over 3,000 cells at optimal temperatures, ensuring high performance during sustained use. This enables ultra-fast charging — the GT XX can recover 400km of WLTP range in just 5 minutes, thanks to charging speeds exceeding 850kW with a standard CCS cable. Mercedes is working with Alpitronic to build compatible prototype chargers as it scales up its Mercedes-Benz Charging Network.

Exterior Design: Where Heritage Meets Innovation

Measuring 5,204mm long, 1,945mm wide, and 1,317mm tall, the GT XX blends AMG’s signature design cues with futuristic styling. Its fastback profile, low-slung bonnet, and sunset beam orange paint pay tribute to classic models like the C111 concepts.

Aerodynamic features include air outlets on the bonnet, an active front splitter, optimized underbody panels, AIRPANEL louvers, and a Venturi diffuser, helping achieve an ultra-low drag coefficient of 0.198. The car’s 21-inch active aero wheels feature electronically controlled blades to balance brake cooling and aero efficiency.

Unique design highlights include MBUX Fluid Light Paint on the side sills, dynamic taillight animations from 700+ RGB LEDs, and integrated exterior speakers within the headlights that enhance both driving sounds and pedestrian safety.

Cabin: Futuristic and Sustainable

Inside, the AMG GT XX Concept features a minimalist, driver-focused cockpit in black, orange, and silver tones. The seats are carbon-fibre buckets with 3D-printed pads wrapped in LABFIBER Biotech Leather Alternative, made from recycled GT3 tyres. The door handles use LABFIBER Biotech Silk Alternative, highlighting AMG’s commitment to sustainable materials.

Two LCD displays — a 10.4-inch digital cluster and a 14-inch infotainment screen — showcase the MB.OS-powered MBUX system, with graphics that highlight the electric powertrain. The F1-inspired steering yoke includes LED charge and performance indicators, while orange high-voltage cables and exposed structural elements reinforce the sporty, high-tech feel.

Production and Rivals

Set for production in 2026, the AMG GT XX will replace the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe and compete with rivals like the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT and Lucid Air Sapphire. The motors will be built at Mercedes-Benz’s Berlin facility, employing 100 advanced manufacturing processes — including 35 global firsts.
