As part of this initiative, the company has unveiled two key biogas projects that will play a crucial role in transforming its energy consumption patterns. Expansion of Manesar Biogas Plant

One of the immediate developments under this initiative is the expansion of the biogas plant at Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar facility. The plant’s capacity has been increased from 0.2 tonnes per day (TPD) to 0.7 TPD, significantly boosting its production capabilities.

With this upgrade, the plant is expected to generate approximately 3.6 lakh standard cubic meters of biogas annually. This increase in output will contribute to an estimated reduction of 664 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year, highlighting the environmental benefits of the project.

The Manesar biogas plant utilizes a variety of organic waste materials, including food waste, Napier grass, and paddy straw. Through anaerobic digestion technology, these materials are converted into biogas, which is then used in critical operations such as paint shop heating and canteen services.

In addition to biogas production, the plant generates Fermented Organic Manure (FOM) as a byproduct. This nutrient-rich material is used for internal horticulture purposes and is also distributed to the agricultural sector, promoting a circular economy approach.

Upcoming High-Capacity Plant at Kharkhoda

The second and more substantial project involves the development of a new biogas plant at Maruti Suzuki’s Kharkhoda facility. With a planned capacity of 10 TPD, this plant is expected to become a cornerstone of the company’s renewable energy infrastructure.

Scheduled for commissioning in the financial year 2026-27, the Kharkhoda plant is projected to significantly reduce carbon emissions by approximately 9,490 tonnes annually. Once fully operational, it will meet around 20 per cent of the facility’s total gas requirements, marking a major step toward energy self-sufficiency.

The scale of this project demonstrates Maruti Suzuki’s commitment to integrating large-scale renewable energy solutions into its manufacturing processes.

Investment in Biogas Projects and Broader Green Energy Strategy

The combined investment in the Manesar and Kharkhoda biogas projects is estimated at ₹150 crore. These projects form part of the company’s broader ₹925 crore green energy investment plan, which encompasses various renewable energy initiatives.

Beyond biogas, Maruti Suzuki is also focusing on expanding its solar power capabilities. The company currently has an installed solar capacity of 79 megawatt-peak (MWp) and aims to increase this to 319 MWp by FY31. Success at Hansalpur Facility Sets Benchmark

Maruti Suzuki’s green energy journey has already shown promising results at its Hansalpur facility. At this plant, biogas has successfully replaced natural gas for approximately 10 per cent of the facility’s energy requirements.

This transition has not only reduced carbon emissions but also ensured operational continuity during periods of liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply disruptions. The success at Hansalpur serves as a model for other facilities and reinforces the viability of biogas as a reliable energy source.
