In his 79th Independence Day address from the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that Made-in-India semiconductor chips will be available in the market by the end of 2025, marking a landmark moment in India’s journey toward technological self-reliance.
Delivering his speech under the theme of Naya Bharat, PM Modi stressed that the 21st century is technology-driven, and India must take a leadership role in crucial sectors such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), and clean energy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalled India’s earlier attempts, saying:
“Fifty to sixty years ago, we began talking about semiconductor factories. But files were stuck, decisions suspended. Today, India is flexing its muscles in semiconductors. We are pushing forward in mission mode.”
Highlighting the government’s proactive steps, he said:
“We have started semiconductor production in mission mode. Six units are in the offing, and four of them are soon coming out of the drawing board.”
This marks a major step in India’s Semiconductor Mission, a program aimed at reducing dependence on imports and positioning the country as a global manufacturing hub for chips.
PM Modi underlined the importance of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India), saying:
“Our next big priority is becoming self-reliant in technology.”
He also connected India’s rising indigenous capabilities to national security, remarking:
“Imagine, had we not been Atmanirbhar, could we have executed Operation Sindoor as smoothly?”
The Prime Minister emphasized that technology is also bridging governance and citizens. He proudly noted that over 50 per cent of the world’s real-time digital transactions are powered by India’s UPI system, reflecting the country’s global leadership in fintech innovation.
He further stated:
“Self-reliance is not limited to trade. It is about our own capability.”
Framing the semiconductor milestone within the broader vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047, PM Modi said that self-reliance in semiconductors will strengthen defence, digital infrastructure, and the economy.
His Independence Day speech showcased a blend of strategic ambition and national pride, with semiconductor production presented not only as an economic achievement but also as a symbol of India’s technological emergence on the global stage.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement that Made-in-India semiconductor chips will be available by the end of 2025 represents a defining moment in India’s pursuit of technological independence.
By prioritizing semiconductor manufacturing, the government is not only addressing a long-standing gap in the nation’s industrial ecosystem but also laying the foundation for India to become a global hub for chip production. This initiative will have far-reaching implications, boosting industries such as defence, telecommunications, digital infrastructure, and clean energy while reducing reliance on imports.
The emphasis on Atmanirbhar Bharat and the Semiconductor Mission aligns seamlessly with the broader vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, signaling India’s intent to lead in the global technology race.
Coupled with India’s dominance in digital payments through UPI, this milestone underlines the country’s capacity for innovation and execution. As India steps into a new era of self-reliance, semiconductor chips stand as a symbol of progress, pride, and strategic strength.
