Instagram has announced a major expansion of its AI-powered Reel translation feature, extending support to five additional Indian languages. The Meta-owned platform said that creators will soon be able to automatically translate and dub their Reels into Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Marathi, significantly widening the reach of regional content creators across India.
The feature builds on Instagram’s AI voice translation tool that was first rolled out in October last year, when Meta enabled automatic dubbing and lip-syncing for Reels to and from English, Hindi, Spanish, and Portuguese. With the latest update, Instagram is strengthening its focus on India’s diverse linguistic landscape.
However, Meta clarified that the newly announced Indian language support will reach users gradually and will be available in the ‘coming months’.
“Creators have the option to use Meta AI to transform their reels, so they sound and look fluent in some of the world’s most spoken languages, helping them reach more people globally and grow an international audience,” the company said in a blog post.
India is one of Instagram’s largest markets, with millions of creators producing content in regional languages. By adding AI-powered translation and dubbing for more Indian languages, Instagram aims to help creators break language barriers and connect with audiences beyond their native regions.
The update is particularly beneficial for:
Regional influencers
Small businesses and educators
Content creators targeting pan-India or global audiences
Instagram says the translation feature goes beyond simple dubbing. It focuses on maintaining authenticity by preserving the creator’s vocal characteristics.
Automatically translates spoken audio into supported languages
Retains the sound and tone of the creator’s original voice
Offers optional lip-syncing, aligning translated speech with mouth movements
According to Meta, this ensures that translated Reels still feel natural and personal, rather than robotic or artificial.
Once the feature becomes available, creators will see a new option while uploading a Reel.
Upload your Reel on Instagram
Look for the option “Translate your voice with Meta AI”

Currently, users can translate Reels into English, Hindi, Spanish, and Portuguese. After the rollout, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Marathi will appear as additional options.
Alongside AI translation, Instagram also announced support for Indian fonts in its Edits app, making it easier for creators to stylise text and captions using native scripts.
Devanagari: Hindi, Marathi
Bengali-Assamese: Bengali, Assamese
Meta confirmed that this update will roll out to Android users in the ‘coming days’.
Open the Edits app on your Android device after updating
Upload the video you want to edit
Tap on the editing timeline
Select ‘Text’ from the bottom tools tray
Tap the ‘Aa’ icon to view available fonts
If your device already uses Devanagari or Bengali-Assamese scripts, Indian fonts will appear by default
Other users can swipe down in the ‘All fonts’ tab to filter fonts by Indian language
This update aligns with Meta’s broader strategy of using AI to enhance creator tools while supporting local languages. Over the past year, the company has increasingly focused on generative AI features across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, especially for high-growth markets like India.
Instagram’s decision to expand AI-powered Reel translation to five more Indian languages marks a significant step toward inclusive, multilingual content creation. By combining realistic voice dubbing, optional lip-syncing, and native font support, Meta is empowering Indian creators to scale their reach without losing authenticity. As the rollout continues in the coming months, the update is expected to reshape how regional content travels across borders on Instagram.
