India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has temporarily halted all flight services to and from Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport following the outbreak of widespread violence in Nepal. The suspension was announced on Tuesday, 9 September 2025, and was later confirmed by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), which issued an official travel advisory to passengers.
“In view of the prevailing situation in #Kathmandu, the airport has been closed for operations. Consequently, all flights to and from Kathmandu stand suspended as of now,” IndiGo informed its passengers through a post on X (formerly Twitter).
The airline has assured travellers that it is working closely with Nepalese authorities to resume flight operations as soon as conditions improve.
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) also released a public statement, confirming that Nepal’s aviation authorities have shut down Tribhuvan International Airport due to safety concerns.
“All departure and arrival flights to Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu, have been cancelled by Nepal authorities. We are working closely with all stakeholders to minimise inconvenience to the passengers. For specific flight information, kindly contact the airline concerned,” DIAL said.
Travellers who had booked tickets to Kathmandu can either reschedule their journey or claim a refund directly from IndiGo’s website.
“If your travel is impacted, you may conveniently opt for an alternate flight or claim a refund by visiting our website,” IndiGo stated.
The airline further added:
“We are closely monitoring the developments and coordinating with local authorities to resume operations at the earliest. Customers are advised to keep checking our official channels for the latest advisories and updates.”
Full refund available via IndiGo’s website.
Alternate travel date can be booked at no extra cost.
Passengers advised to stay updated via IndiGo’s app, website, or social media handles.
Tata-owned Air India joined IndiGo in suspending services on the Delhi-Kathmandu-Delhi route. The airline announced the cancellation of multiple flights, citing security concerns amid the violent unrest in Nepal.
“In view of the current situation prevailing in Kathmandu, the following flights AI2231/2232, AI2219/2220 and AI217/218 operating on the Delhi-Kathmandu-Delhi route have been cancelled today. We are closely monitoring the situation and will share further updates. At Air India, the safety of our passengers and crew remain top priority,” said an Air India spokesperson.
The unrest in Nepal has forced aviation authorities to take precautionary measures, impacting cross-border connectivity between India and Nepal. Kathmandu airport, which handles most of the country’s international traffic, remains suspended until further notice.
The suspension of flights by IndiGo and Air India highlights the seriousness of the ongoing violence in Nepal, which has disrupted not only daily life but also international air travel. Both airlines have prioritized passenger safety and assured that refunds and rescheduling options are available. As the situation unfolds, travellers are strongly advised to remain in touch with their respective airlines and follow official advisories before planning their journey.
