India recorded 31.72 lakh vehicle retail sales in October 2026, with electric vehicle registrations reaching 3.55 lakh units, according to the latest FADA report.

India's Automobile Retail Market Grows 25% in October

India's automobile retail market witnessed a significant improvement in October 2026, with total vehicle registrations reaching 31,72,466 units. According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), sales increased 25.05% compared with September 2026.

However, the market recorded a 23.80% decline compared with October 2025. FADA explained that the year-on-year comparison was affected by an unusually strong festive season last year, when Navratri and Diwali celebrations both took place in October.

Despite the annual decline, October 2026 remained the second-highest October for automobile retail sales on record. The sequential growth also indicated healthy festive demand across several vehicle categories.

EV Sales Reach Record 3.55 Lakh Units in October

Electric vehicles emerged as the strongest growth segment in India's automobile market during October.

Total EV retail registrations reached approximately 3.55 lakh units, representing a 44.88% increase compared with the corresponding month last year. Electric vehicles accounted for around 11.5% of overall automobile retail sales, compared with approximately 6% in October 2025.

According to FADA, electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles all recorded their highest-ever October sales.

The growing contribution of electric vehicles highlights the increasing adoption of electric mobility across different segments of India's automobile industry.

Why Did Vehicle Sales Decline Year-on-Year?

The annual decline in October vehicle registrations needs to be understood in the context of last year's festive calendar.

In October 2025, both Navratri and Diwali celebrations boosted automobile purchases. Demand was also supported by purchases deferred earlier and subsequently released following GST 2.0 rate reductions.

In 2026, Navratri took place in October, while Dhanteras and Diwali shifted to November. This difference affected the year-on-year comparison, particularly for festival-sensitive categories.

FADA President Sai Giridhar said the 25% month-on-month increase provides a more meaningful indication of festive demand this year.

Two-Wheeler Sales Reach 23.21 Lakh Units

The two-wheeler segment recorded retail sales of 23,21,419 units in October 2026. This represented a 28.35% decline year-on-year but a 29.67% improvement compared with September.

Two-wheelers experienced the sharpest annual decline among the major vehicle categories because their demand is closely connected to festive purchases and rural economic conditions.

Dealers reported healthy customer footfall during the festive period. However, sales continued to face challenges in some rural markets affected by insufficient rainfall and weaker kharif crop performance.

The reduction in last year's GST-related price advantage, following subsequent manufacturer price increases, also influenced purchasing decisions.

Commercial Vehicle Sales Record Best-Ever October

Commercial vehicles delivered a strong performance, recording 1,15,140 retail units during October.

Sales increased 2.29% compared with October 2025 and 11.19% over September 2026. This marked the highest-ever October performance for the commercial vehicle category.

Heavy Commercial Vehicles (HCVs) led the growth with a 28.95% increase, while Medium Commercial Vehicles (MCVs) registered growth of 21.16%.

However, Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) recorded a decline of 9.57%, indicating differences in demand across commercial vehicle subcategories.

Passenger Vehicle Sales Reach 5.07 Lakh Units

Passenger vehicle retail registrations stood at 5,07,768 units in October 2026.

Although sales declined 14.23% year-on-year against the exceptional festive performance of October 2025, they increased 18.86% compared with September.

Utility vehicles and new model launches continued to support demand, while entry-level passenger cars remained comparatively weak.

FADA highlighted inventory levels as an important concern for automobile dealers. Passenger vehicle stock remained around 43–45 days in October, unchanged from September, despite strong wholesale dispatches by manufacturers.

The association expects inventory levels to decline towards the 30-day range by the end of the calendar year as festive retail demand picks up.

Three-Wheelers, Tractors and Construction Equipment Show Growth

Several other automobile categories also reported positive year-on-year growth during October 2026.

According to FADA data:

  • Three-wheelers: Sales increased 3.97%, achieving their best-ever October performance.

  • Tractors: Registrations grew 3.10%, marking the highest October sales on record.

  • Construction equipment: Sales increased 22.07%, reflecting strong demand in the segment.

These figures indicate that the improvement in India's automobile market extended beyond passenger cars and two-wheelers.

Conclusion

India's automobile retail market delivered strong sequential growth in October 2026, despite a decline in year-on-year sales caused largely by the shifting festive calendar. Record EV registrations, along with the best-ever October performance in commercial vehicles, three-wheelers and tractors, highlighted positive market momentum. With Diwali demand moving into November, the coming months will be important for the industry's overall growth and inventory management.
