News Synopsis

According to a recent report, Hyundai Motor India has removed the entry-level Santro hatchback from the Indian shelves due to low demand. A very popular name in the Indian automotive sector,  Hyundai Santoro, when first launched in 1998, popularized the Korean brand in its first innings.

However, when the model was revived in 2018, it failed to match the expectations of the automaker. Hyundai now seems to have decided to unplug its products in order to consolidate its resources and minimize supply chain constraints.

According to a leaked document, Santro petrol was discontinued while the CNG variant will still remain on sale. The petrol version of the vehicle will be sold until it is out of stock, while there is still no clarity on the CNG model at the moment.

The Hyundai Santoro was renewed in 2018  and the price ranged from Rs 39,000 to Rs 55,000 (exhibition room). But recently, model prices have risen dramatically as pandemics, a shortage of semiconductor chips, and the Russia-Ukraine war have triggered a 20-30% increase in input costs.
