After weeks of anticipation, Honda has officially launched the new CBR 650R E-Clutch in India at an ex-showroom price of ₹10.20 lakh. This makes the updated model ₹20,000 more expensive than the previous variant, thanks to the addition of cutting-edge E-Clutch technology.
The highlight of the new CBR 650R is the Honda E-Clutch system, a patented innovation that blends the control of a manual transmission with the convenience of an automatic gearbox. It functions similarly to the intelligent manual transmission (iMT) seen in select Hyundai and Kia vehicles, enabling manual gear shifts without the need to operate the clutch lever.
Originally unveiled globally in November 2023, Honda’s E-Clutch system combines traits of a quick-shifter, conventional manual clutch, and dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Despite keeping the standard clutch and gearbox hardware, the inclusion of the E-Clutch mechanism adds approximately 2 kg to the motorcycle’s overall weight.
The E-Clutch allows for clutchless gear changes during both upshifts and downshifts. It also enables smooth starts and stops, eliminating the need to pull in the clutch manually. Once the engine is started, the system activates automatically and prevents the motorcycle from stalling in traffic or low-speed situations.
Riders can still manually use the clutch lever when desired. Once released, the E-Clutch re-engages automatically, offering a seamless transition between manual and electronic operation.
The system supports three adjustable shift sensitivities—hard, medium, and soft—applicable to both upshifts and downshifts. Additionally, the instrument cluster prompts the rider to downshift if the gear selected is too high for the speed, enhancing riding safety and control.
The clutch’s engagement process is guided by real-time input from throttle position, engine speed, gear selection, and gear pedal pressure. A dual-motor actuator located within the engine casing manages the clutch operation, while the ECU adjusts ignition and fuel injection timing for smoother transitions.
The new CBR 650R is powered by a 649cc, inline four-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine, producing 94 bhp and 63 Nm of peak torque. This engine is paired with a 6-speed gearbox that now comes with the innovative E-Clutch system, offering a refined and responsive ride for both city and highway usage.
Honda continues to equip the CBR 650R with Showa 41mm SFF-BP front forks and an adjustable monoshock at the rear, delivering a balanced and agile ride. Braking duties are handled by dual 310mm radial-mounted front discs and a 240mm rear disc, supported by dual-channel ABS for added safety during high-speed or sudden braking situations.
The bike also features Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC), which enhances rear wheel traction by regulating engine torque, ensuring a stable and confident ride even in slippery or uneven conditions.
The motorcycle is fitted with a modern 5-inch TFT instrument cluster, which is compatible with Honda RoadSync—a smartphone connectivity suite. Through the RoadSync app, riders can access features such as turn-by-turn navigation, call and SMS alerts, music controls, and more, ensuring convenience and connectivity on the go.
The Honda CBR 650R E-Clutch is available in two premium colour options:
Grand Prix Red
Matt Gunpowder Black Metallic
These shades not only highlight the bike’s sporty appeal but also add to its road presence.
The launch of the Honda CBR 650R E-Clutch marks a significant technological step in the Indian middleweight motorcycle segment. By combining performance, innovation, and rider convenience, Honda has positioned the CBR 650R as a premium offering for enthusiasts looking for a blend of manual feel and automatic ease.
