Google is preparing one of the biggest transformations in Android’s history as it pushes artificial intelligence deeper into the smartphone experience. Ahead of its annual developer conference, the company unveiled plans to integrate Gemini Intelligence directly into Android, turning smartphones into proactive AI-powered assistants capable of understanding context, automating tasks, and interacting seamlessly across apps.
The upcoming overhaul signals a major shift in how users interact with Android devices. Instead of relying on standalone apps and manual actions, Google wants Android phones to anticipate user needs and perform tasks automatically through AI-driven assistance.
The move also intensifies competition with rivals such as Apple, which is expected to announce major updates to its Apple Intelligence ecosystem during the upcoming WWDC event.
At the centre of Google’s Android revamp is a new Gemini Intelligence layer that expands Gemini from being a conversational chatbot into a system-wide AI assistant integrated across third-party applications.
Google executives said the goal is to reduce friction in daily smartphone use by allowing AI to handle repetitive and routine tasks automatically.
“We believe that an intelligent system, and an agent that it empowers, should just get things done for you, especially the more mundane, boring daily tasks. Another thing is that it should meet you where you are and the apps that you’re already in with proactive suggestions,” said Dieter Bohn, director of product operations at Google.
This marks a major evolution in Android’s functionality, where AI will no longer remain limited to voice assistants or isolated apps but instead become embedded throughout the operating system.
Google detailed several upcoming Gemini Intelligence capabilities that will enhance productivity and convenience for users.
Gemini Intelligence will improve autofill functions by understanding context while users fill forms across apps and websites. This could reduce manual typing and make online transactions or registrations faster.
One of the standout additions is a new feature called Rambler for Android’s keyboard app.
The feature can transform casually spoken sentences filled with pauses or filler words into clear and organised messages, summaries, or lists.
Google is also enabling Gemini to automate actions such as booking tickets for events discovered online or helping users complete multi-step digital tasks with minimal interaction.
The company said developers are being provided with tools and integration guidelines to ensure these AI features work smoothly across the Android ecosystem.
Google confirmed that Gemini Intelligence features will be introduced gradually over the coming months, beginning with premium Android smartphones.

When asked about a possible subscription-based model for Gemini Intelligence usage, Greenwood clarified that basic AI functionality will remain widely accessible.
“There are some usage limits for higher usage, and in those cases, you can upgrade to an AI subscription plan,” he said.

The company is expected to provide more details regarding usage restrictions and premium AI capabilities once Gemini Intelligence becomes deeply integrated at the operating system level.
Google revealed that Gemini integration inside Chrome will begin rolling out from late June.
“Starting in late June with Chrome Auto browse, Gemini inside Chrome will be able to help you with everything from appointment, party planning, or searching for an out of stock item, from your Android phone,” Greenwood detailed the first step of an elaborate plan.
This feature aims to make web browsing more interactive and task-oriented by allowing Gemini to assist users directly within Chrome.
As AI systems gain deeper access to user data and device activity, privacy concerns are becoming increasingly important.
Google said its Gemini Intelligence philosophy combines both on-device AI processing and secure cloud computing.
The company highlighted its Private AI Compute technology introduced in November, which allows Gemini models to process sensitive data inside a protected environment.
“Some are delivered on device, while published and verifiable private technologies in the cloud offer similar privacy behaviours. These are all investments we’re making to ensure that across intelligence features, users can have the best quality experience, and be safe and private,” Greenwood said.
Google also clarified that data used by Gemini Intelligence — including documents, IDs, or images stored in Gmail, Google Drive, or Google Photos — depends entirely on what users choose to share.
However, it remains unclear whether users will have full opt-out options for individual Gemini Intelligence features.
Apart from AI upgrades, Google is introducing new digital wellness features designed to reduce smartphone addiction and distraction.
“We’re all guilty of popping into our phones to do something quick, and then you end up on autopilot and in some app, and suddenly an hour has gone by. App times are one solution for this, but they’re easy to ignore without thinking about it,” Bohn noted.
Android will soon include pause prompts for apps identified as distracting. Instead of opening immediately, users may first see breathing exercises or photo-based calming screens encouraging mindful usage decisions.
The company said additional digital well-being tools will arrive later this year.
