Google Photos is expanding its AI-powered creative tools with a new feature called Me Meme, allowing users to turn their personal photos into memes using generative AI. The feature is currently rolling out in the US on Android and iOS and is expected to reach more regions in the coming months.
Google is introducing a new Me Meme feature in Google Photos that enables users to create memes using their own images. According to Google, “Me Meme uses generative AI to help users create fun, personalised images that can be saved to the photo library or shared easily on social media.”
The feature appears under the Create tab in Google Photos and is currently rolling out in the US on both Android and iOS devices. Google has indicated that the feature is expected to expand to additional regions over time.
According to Google, the Me Meme feature appears inside the Create tab, which the company has been steadily expanding with AI-driven creative tools. The feature allows users to generate personalised meme-style images using their own photos, making it easier to create light-hearted and shareable content.
Google says users need two things to generate a meme in the app:
Users can select from Google’s preset meme templates
Or upload a custom image to use as a template
Users select an image from their Google Photos library
The AI places the user at the centre of the meme scene
Once both elements are selected, the AI combines them into a meme-style image.
Unlike conventional meme apps that depend on manual editing, cropping, or text overlays, Me Meme relies on generative AI to automatically adapt the user’s image to the selected template.
This allows Google Photos to intelligently blend the subject into the scene rather than simply placing text or stickers on top of an image.
Me Meme becomes part of a broader set of creative tools already available in the Create tab, including:
Create with AI
Photo to video
Remix
Collage
Highlight video
Cinematic photo
Animation
Google continues to position Google Photos as more than just a backup service, turning it into a creative AI-driven photo and video platform.
The rollout of Me Meme appears to be limited for now. The feature is labelled experimental, meaning:
It may not be visible on all supported devices
Availability could vary by account or region
Google has not confirmed a timeline for expansion beyond the US or availability in regions such as India.
Follow these steps once the feature is available on your device:
Open the Google Photos app
Tap Create at the bottom of the screen
Select Me Meme
Choose a meme template from the available options
Tap Add photo
Select the photo you want to use
Tap Generate to create your meme
Once the meme is created, users can choose from the following options:
Tap Save to store the meme in the photo library
Tap Regenerate to create a new AI-generated version
Tap Share to post it on other platforms or send it to contacts
Why This Feature Matters
Google’s Me Meme feature highlights the company’s continued push to integrate generative AI into everyday consumer apps. By bringing meme creation directly into Google Photos, Google removes the need for third-party meme apps while encouraging more engagement with personal photo libraries.
