Google Maps has announced a significant expansion of its free usage limits across its product portfolio, marking a notable development for developers globally, including in India. Effective March 1, 2025, developers can access products such as Maps, Routes, Places, and Environment APIs and SDKs for free up to a specified monthly limit. This initiative aims to empower developers to innovate and build applications without financial constraints.
In India, this update translates to a dramatic increase in free usage limits. Currently, developers receive $200 in monthly credits. Starting in March 2025, they will gain access to free usage worth up to $6,800 (approximately ₹5,70,000) across all products, significantly enhancing their ability to leverage Google's powerful mapping tools.
Google Maps is also reducing its API prices by up to 70% for Indian developers. This follows the company’s collaboration with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) in July 2024, which provided discounts of up to 90% on select Google Maps Platform APIs.
These changes have already delivered substantial financial relief to developers. According to Google’s blog post:
“As a result of these changes, many developers have seen their bills decrease by more than half, with smaller developers seeing even larger reductions.”
Google emphasized that these initiatives aim to make its mapping tools more accessible and to foster local innovation for developers of all sizes. The expanded free usage will enable developers to explore new features like Places Nearby or Dynamic Street View to enhance user experiences.
Developers can also create proofs-of-concept, such as delivery service models, using the Routes API without significant financial commitments.
Google Maps clarified that some of its most-used tools, including the Maps Embed API and Maps SDK, will continue to offer unlimited free usage. Developers will only incur costs if their usage exceeds the expanded free limits, making this a highly developer-friendly update.

The company has also introduced AI-driven features tailored for India, such as Address Descriptors to display addresses in local formats and the Air Quality API, which provides accurate environmental data.
