Google has officially launched its AI-powered NotebookLM app for Android and iOS, making the intelligent note-taking assistant accessible on mobile devices for the first time. Initially released in 2023 as a desktop-only platform, NotebookLM is now available on smartphones, bringing advanced features like smart summaries, document analysis, and interactive learning directly into users' hands—just in time for the upcoming Google I/O 2025.
The mobile app mirrors the desktop version in terms of layout and features, offering a clean and intuitive interface. Upon opening the app, users are greeted with a home screen showcasing all their notebooks. The top section includes filters such as Recent, Shared, Title, and Downloaded, enabling quick access to specific notebooks.
A prominent “Create New” button at the bottom encourages users to start new projects instantly. Content can be added from a variety of sources including PDFs, websites, pasted text, and direct links.
NotebookLM goes a step further by integrating with the native Android and iOS share sheets, allowing users to save content from other apps with just a few taps. Whether it’s a web article, YouTube video, or PDF document, users can easily import it into their notebooks as a source, simplifying the research and note collection process.
One of the standout features in the mobile version is Audio Overviews. This tool creates podcast-style summaries of uploaded documents, narrated by AI-generated hosts. Rather than reading the documents aloud verbatim, the hosts engage in a conversational breakdown of the content, simplifying complex topics and making learning more accessible and enjoyable.
This feature is especially useful for students, professionals, or multitaskers who prefer passive learning during commutes, workouts, or while performing other activities.
NotebookLM isn’t just about passive consumption. During audio sessions, users can ask follow-up questions, seek clarifications, or explore specific segments in more detail. This interactive element transforms a static document into a dynamic learning session, blending AI’s analytical power with user curiosity.
Whether you’re reading a long-form blog post, watching a video tutorial, or reviewing research in PDF format, you can instantly share that content to NotebookLM. Simply hit the share icon on your mobile device, select NotebookLM, and the content will be saved as a source within your selected notebook.
Google has also hinted that more file types and platforms will be supported in upcoming updates, expanding the app’s versatility even further.
Understanding the need for uninterrupted access, especially during travel or low connectivity areas, Google has enabled offline download for Audio Overviews. This ensures users can continue learning even without an active internet connection.
NotebookLM automatically adapts to your device's system theme, offering light and dark modes. However, users currently can’t toggle themes within the app itself—a feature that might arrive in future updates. Each notebook card displays useful metadata including title, emoji, number of sources, last edited timestamp, and the Audio Overview play button.
The timing of this mobile rollout is no coincidence. With Google I/O 2025 around the corner, this release reinforces Google’s push toward making AI more personal and integrated into daily productivity.
