Google Photos is now leveraging SynthID technology to mark images that have been modified using its generative AI editing tool, Reimagine in Magic Editor. SynthID is already available to Vertex AI customers who use Google’s Imagen 3 and Imagen 2 text-to-image models. These models are capable of generating high-quality images in various artistic styles and have been instrumental in Google's AI-powered image creation.
Additionally, SynthID has been implemented in ImageFX and Veo, Google's most advanced video generation model. Currently, Veo is accessible to select creators through the VideoFX platform. SynthID plays a crucial role in maintaining authenticity across AI-generated visuals, ensuring that users are aware of AI involvement in image modifications.
SynthID has been designed to function without compromising image or video quality. It embeds an imperceptible watermark that remains detectable even after common modifications such as:

Applying filters
Altering colors
Changing frame rates
Saving with different compression formats
The ability to retain watermark detection despite alterations ensures that AI-edited content remains identifiable, making it easier to distinguish between real and modified images. Google states that SynthID can scan a single image or even individual frames of a video to detect digital watermarking.
While SynthID is a powerful tool for AI-generated content identification, it does have certain limitations. Google acknowledges that small edits made using Reimagine in Magic Editor may sometimes be too subtle for SynthID to detect. For example, if a user changes the color of a tiny flower in the background of an image, the watermarking technology may not label it as an AI-edited image.
To provide additional transparency, users can access the "About this Image" feature in Google Photos. This tool displays whether a SynthID watermark is present and also provides information regarding the metadata of an image.
Introduced in 2024, Reimagine is one of Google’s latest generative AI tools, designed to enhance digital photos through intelligent modifications.
