News Synopsis

Every car cabin you step into after the EQS580 Maybach may feel slightly underwhelming, yet with a significant savings of Rs. 80 lakh, you might find it acceptable to trade business-class seating for first-class comforts, or to forgo bespoke Champagne flutes for standard coffee cup holders. The EQS580 SUV essentially delivers a similar luxurious experience at a more attractive price point.

Design

Mercedes-Benz India is known for launching its top-tier models in the most opulent settings, and the EQS580 SUV is no exception, showcased against the stunning backdrop of the historic Falaknuma Palace in Hyderabad. This model features a more understated aesthetic compared to its Maybach counterpart, with minimal branding that aligns it with the brand’s other EQ models.

The SUV showcases a large blacked-out panel in place of a traditional front grille, adorned with subtle imprinted tristars that lend a classy yet understated look. Its striking digital lights, equipped with millions of pixels, mirror those found in the EQS sedan, while the 21-inch wheels provide the necessary stance of an SUV.

Designed to accommodate seven passengers, the EQS580 opts for practicality over the 2+2 seating configuration of its Maybach sibling. When the third row is folded down, the SUV offers an impressive 880 liters of boot space—making it potentially the world’s most luxurious moving van! However, while the second and third rows can be folded down electronically, the third row requires manual adjustment, which can be seen as a minor inconvenience.

Comfort

The EQS580's second row boasts a full suite of entertainment features, including 11.6-inch personal MBUX screens, a 7-inch tablet nestled within the fold-down armrest, and a pair of ANC wireless headphones. With more than ten USB-C ports and two wireless charging pads, communication among passengers may become a rarity!

However, some aspects of the interior quality raise concerns, such as a manually locked rear sunscreen using adhesive clips on plastic door pads. Additionally, the rear seats lack cooling functionality, an odd omission for a vehicle aimed at tropical markets. Nevertheless, legroom and comfort are abundant, featuring a recline option and plush pillows that have become synonymous with modern Mercedes seating.

While the third row is suitable for short distances, it’s more of a 5+2 configuration, making it less comfortable for adults on longer journeys. The true appeal lies in its capability for short family outings.

Technology

Stepping into the EQS580's cockpit feels like entering a high-end version of the S-Class. The standout feature is the 56-inch Hyperscreen, which includes a 17.7-inch OLED touchscreen in the center flanked by two 12.3-inch screens for the driver and passenger. The graphics and resolution surpass anything else on the market, complemented by impressive processing speed. Augmented reality maps enhance the driving experience, with an accurate built-in navigation system capable of replacing Google Maps.

The EQS580 also boasts an advanced heads-up display (HUD) featuring full-color graphics, gauges, and an off-road mode right in the driver’s line of sight. The vehicle includes a Transparent Bonnet feature, providing a view of what’s underneath via a camera feed—perfect for off-road excursions if managed sensibly.

The zero-layer design of the MBUX system simplifies access to features, ensuring climate control and audio shortcuts remain on screen for easy use. However, the decision to place the volume and drive mode controls behind the cupholders on the center console raises questions about convenience. Additionally, the capacitive buttons on the steering wheel have a learning curve that may frustrate some users.

Performance

Weighing in at nearly 2.8 tonnes, the EQS580 isn’t the most agile SUV. However, with a formidable 536 horsepower and 858 Nm of torque instantly available, its acceleration is impressive. The vehicle can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in under five seconds, providing a thrilling experience that pins you against the seat. While the dual motor propulsion can be exhilarating, it’s also capable of offering a soothing ride when switched to comfort mode, making the EQS580 one of the most tranquil vehicles on the market.

Equipped with a massive 122 kWh battery pack, the EQS580 offers a class-leading real-world range exceeding 600 kilometers. Although Mercedes claims a monumental 809 kilometers certified by ARAI, drivers can reasonably expect a range of around 500 kilometers even under spirited driving conditions.

In most scenarios, especially when not stuck in traffic, the EQS580 performs remarkably well in Sport Mode, while Comfort Mode may lead to excessive body roll on winding roads.

The EQS580's immense power makes it thrilling to drive in a straight line, though passengers may feel the effects of speed more than the driver. Under braking, the weight is felt, reminding you of the mass you're managing. Below 60 km/h, the rear axle steering enhances maneuverability by allowing the rear wheels to turn up to 10 degrees in the opposite direction, significantly reducing the turning radius.

Conclusion

the EQS580 SUV feels like a gadget on wheels, loaded with multiple screens, abundant USB ports, ANC headphones, Car-to-X communication, augmented reality navigation, and a Transparent Bonnet feature. The passenger screen is equipped with games, and the HUD provides an immersive driving experience. Various login options for the MBUX system, including facial recognition and fingerprint access, customize your experience by adjusting settings from ambient lighting to seating position. Additionally, the hot stone massage feature adds a touch of luxury to the already exceptional seating.

With a price tag that feels like a steal compared to the EQS Maybach, the EQS580 SUV offers an experience that doesn’t compromise on pampering or luxury.
