Elon Musk has introduced an intriguing new addition to his AI chatbot platform Grok — customisable AI companions. This feature, now in soft launch, is being rolled out exclusively to Super Grok subscribers, part of the $30-per-month X Premium+ subscription.
The first set of AI characters includes a goth anime-style girl named Ani and a red panda companion named Rudy, both designed to enhance user engagement and add a personal, playful dimension to AI interaction.
“This is pretty cool,” Elon Musk wrote in one of his recent posts on X, sharing an image of the anime companion Ani.
Ani, a visually striking character, is depicted with blonde pigtails, a black corset, a short dress, and thigh-high fishnet stockings — a design that blends anime aesthetics with a goth-inspired style. Rudy, in contrast, is styled as a cute red panda, offering users a more wholesome and animated companion.
Both characters are interactive AI personas and are currently available within the Grok app. Users can access them by adjusting app settings — though, as Musk confirmed, activation will become easier for Super AI users in the coming days.
These AI companions are more than just visual avatars — they can engage in Grok-style conversations, potentially providing fun, emotional, or functional interactions tailored to individual preferences.
While xAI (Musk's AI venture) has not released detailed specs about the companions’ features, early user feedback suggests these avatars are fully interactive, supporting features like voice chat, which is already present in Grok.
The new feature is part of Super Grok, a premium tier within the broader X Premium+ offering. For $30/month, subscribers gain access to:
DeepSearch
Real-time data access
Image generation
Reasoning mode for advanced problem-solving
And now, AI companions
These additions indicate Musk’s strategic focus on deep personalization and engagement-driven design to boost platform value for paying users.
“One of the avatars, Ani, is said to feature a not-safe-for-work (NSFW) mode that alters her appearance, including suggestive clothing,” reports The Verge.
Though xAI has yet to officially confirm this, early reports and visuals shared on X suggest that Ani includes a NSFW mode, prompting concerns over content moderation, age-appropriate access, and the ethical framing of AI personas.
Already, NSFW images associated with Ani have surfaced online, triggering a broader conversation about the boundaries of virtual companion content, especially in platforms where content visibility is high.
“The rollout of AI companions has also reignited the broader debate around the psychological impact of AI relationships.”
Although Grok’s AI companions have not been explicitly marketed as romantic or emotional partners, the stylised designs and customisation options place them within a growing trend of AI-driven companionship, blurring the lines between utility, entertainment, and emotional interaction.
The rise of persona-driven AI, especially those that mimic human traits, raises questions about digital intimacy, dependency, and the mental health impact of AI-based relationships.
“Users have spotted a third character, named Chad, who may soon be added to the Grok AI companion lineup.”
This suggests xAI is planning to expand its persona library, possibly offering a diverse range of personalities to cater to different demographics and user preferences.
The presence of voice chat features further amplifies the potential for immersive, multi-modal conversations, making Grok one of the most versatile AI companions in the consumer market.
Elon Musk's introduction of AI companions within Grok marks a significant expansion of what AI chatbots can offer — moving from functional tools to customizable, emotionally engaging personas.
While features like Ani and Rudy bring playful innovation to the platform, the NSFW concerns and potential psychological implications highlight the need for robust moderation and ethical standards.
With more characters likely on the way and deeper personalisation being unlocked, Grok may be paving the way for a new era of AI companionship — both fascinating and controversial.
