In a pivotal move that underscores India's commitment to global wellness, the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, has officially introduced a new category of visa known as the Ayush (AY) visa. This innovative visa type is specifically tailored for foreign nationals seeking treatment under the Ayush systems and Indian systems of medicine. With this groundbreaking introduction, India solidifies its position as a hub for traditional healing practices and holistic well-being.
The genesis of the Ayush Visa emanates from the proposal to establish a special visa scheme for foreigners seeking therapeutic care, wellness, and yoga under India's renowned Ayush and traditional medical systems. This visionary step not only streamlines access to these healing methodologies but also aligns with India's unwavering dedication to nurturing its traditional medical heritage.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has formally incorporated a dedicated chapter, Chapter 11A, named "Ayush Visa," within the Visa Manual. This chapter caters specifically to individuals seeking treatment under India's systems of medicine. Simultaneously, relevant amendments have been made across various chapters of the Visa Manual, 2019, to accommodate this addition seamlessly.
Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ayush and Ports, Shipping & Waterways, expressed the significance of the Ayush Visa category. He stated, "The creation of the new Ayush (AY) visa category for foreign nationals seeking treatment under Ayush systems/Indian systems of medicine is a significant step. It will boost the Medical Value of Travel in India. This initiative will strengthen our endeavour to accomplish our Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision for making Indian traditional medicine a global phenomenon."
The impetus behind this visionary initiative is none other than the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi himself. The special Ayush Visa category was announced during the Global Ayush Investment and Innovation Summit (GAIIS) held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, in April 2022.
The introduction of the Ayush Visa aligns seamlessly with India's broader Heal in India initiative, which is aimed at positioning India as a global destination for medical value travel. In partnership with the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, the Ministry of Ayush is diligently developing a comprehensive Heal in India portal that will serve as a singular hub to promote India as a premier medical tourism destination worldwide.
The realm of Medical Value Travel has been experiencing remarkable growth in India, a trend that is projected to continue. According to the Global Wellness Institute (GWI), the Global Wellness Economy is set to expand at an annual rate of 9.9%. Within this landscape, the Ayush-based healthcare and wellness economy is forecasted to reach an impressive $70 billion by the year 2025.
The Ministry of Ayush has been actively fostering collaborations to elevate the Ayush system of treatment both nationally and internationally. A recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was inked with the India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, aimed at promoting Medical Value Travel in Ayurveda and other traditional systems of medicine.
