Under a $2 billion agreement, Australia's top-secret intelligence data will be moved to the cloud via Amazon.com Inc.'s (NASDAQ) cloud service, Amazon Web Services (AWS). It is anticipated that this decision will improve the nation's defense force interoperability with the US.
The Australian Signals Directorate, the country’s National security agency, will increase its use of artificial intelligence to analyze data as part of this transition. The plan includes the construction of top-secret data centers in Australia, as reported by Reuters on Thursday.
Defense Minister Richard Marles stated that the move to cloud services provided by Amazon will provide greater resilience to data supporting the defense force. This will ensure a common computing operating environment with the U.S. defense forces in the future. Marles emphasized the strategic importance of this transition, highlighting how it will bolster national security through enhanced data management and analysis capabilities.
Rachel Noble, Director General of the Australian Signals Directorate, highlighted the significant role of artificial intelligence in this transition.
She stated, “Artificial intelligence is an important game changer for all of us in the intelligence community, and we are working to embrace the use of it in an ethical, well-governed, and well-understood manner. We need to carefully understand how AI tools are being used, what they are doing to the data, and how they need to be governed.”
