Amazon India announced on Monday a strategic partnership with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) to accelerate the use and development of Low Carbon Fuels (LCFs) for long-haul transportation in India. Through this collaboration, Amazon and HPCL will work together to reduce carbon emissions by creating practical and sustainable solutions for the logistics sector in the country.
In a joint statement, Amazon India highlighted that this initiative aligns with its broader goal to reach net-zero carbon emissions across all operations by 2040 as part of The Climate Pledge. The move supports India’s national commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.
Amazon and HPCL plan to launch a pilot program that will test the efficacy and scalability of LCFs for Amazon’s long-haul transport fleet. This pilot will investigate optimal strategies for fuel utilization in transport vehicles and explore the potential for fuelling hubs and mobile refuelling stations to provide widespread and convenient access to low-carbon fuels across India.

In alignment with its global commitment under The Climate Pledge, Amazon India aims to accelerate the integration of low-emission fuels within its transportation network, thus supporting India's ambitious energy goals while also reinforcing its own efforts to reduce emissions.
To ensure that low-carbon fuel adoption is successful, Amazon and HPCL will work closely with government entities, regulatory bodies, and industry think tanks. This collaboration aims to facilitate policy support and create a framework to scale LCFs throughout the nation. According to Amazon, this multi-stakeholder approach is critical for the long-term success of low-carbon fuel initiatives.
Additionally, Amazon India indicated that the partnership will leverage agricultural and industrial waste to produce biofuels in Visakhapatnam and Bahadurgarh. The companies are committed to using this waste-to-fuel strategy as a sustainable approach to fuel production, with plans to establish a network of fuelling hubs and mobile refuelling stations across all Indian states.
