Want to eat Mochi Donuts? What’s that?

This article is all about mochi donuts and why this dish is trending across the nation. I know you might have never heard of this dish, and from where did it originally come! A donut is a portion of American food that has taken the world by storm. You don’t have to be a cop to taste a donut. Mochi, on the other hand, is a Japanese delicacy that is just too tasty to not try. If you ever visit Japan, do try this dish and bring some to your country too, or at least learn how to make it. Let’s talk about how the two dishes from different parts of the world joined hands and made a mouth-watering delicacy.

Donuts, Anyone?

There will hardly be anyone who doesn’t know what donuts are! They are among the most loved foods in the nation. It isn’t just food but an emotion that is expressed globally. They are made up of fried dough that has been left for a while. That’s why it is called leavened fried dough food. Being a sweet snack, it is very popular. You can have donuts on the go with coffee, water, or anything to drink. You can find donuts in every street you roam about. That is the popularity of this food. You can escape it no matter how hard you try. You will find various alterations of this food, but originally, it had only two types. One was a simple ring donut that we most commonly see in movies where cops buy them while patrolling. The second one is a filled donut which is a real treat if you ask me. They are filled with certain fruit preserves like jelly (jelly donuts). It also has fillings like chocolate, cream, custard, and whatever you can think of injecting in a donut. Isn’t it a beautiful and tasty creation of humans!

Mochi, Anyone?

“Nē, mochi o motte.” (Hey, have some mochi!) You will never say no to such a tasty Japanese delicacy. Mochi is a rice cake basically that looks like a Momo. It is made from Mochigome. Mochigome is short-grain rice. Mochi is a gelatin-free dish ubiquitous in Japan and has made it all the way to America via Hawaii. Talking about Mochi, it has many different constituents in it like lipids, proteins, polysaccharides, and much more. It is a bubbly dish with the presence of amylopectin gel and starch grains. For fitness lovers, Mochi has a good amount of protein in it. Mochi is festival food. It is made in large quantity in festivals like Sakura (a cherry blossom season) and Japanese New Year.

Now the amalgamation of the two tastiest foods from respective countries gave rise to even a more delicious dish for all foodies out there. It’s the Mochi Donuts!

Hello, Mochi Donuts!

Mochi Donut is a mix-n-match of American donuts and Japanese mochi. Sometimes these are called hybrid cakes of chewy mochi and donuts. From Japan, mochi traveled to America, and Mochi donuts became a thing in Hawaii that took over the country. In Hawaii, butter mochi is very popular and is a treat to have. Butter Mochi donuts are baked. Now there are two types of Mochi Donuts. The flour used can be different, but all flours end up making either of the two mochi donuts:

  1. Pon de Ring Mochi Donuts – These yummy Mochi donuts are made from tapioca flour. These donuts are very light and are pull-apart type donuts. What is a pull-apart donut, you might think? It is a segmented donut that can be easily separated from the fellow pieces. A sweet glaze is spread all over it. Mouthwatering, isn’t it? Pon de Ring has borrowed the name from a Brazilian cheesy delicacy that goes by the name of Pao de Queijo. Pao de Queijo is a cheese puff, very popular in Brazil. This cheese puff uses the same tapioca flour that is used by our Pon de Ring.

  2. Glutinous Rice Flour Mochi Donuts – It is a common donut that you can find in America. It uses sweet rice flour and is heavier than Pon de Ring. When you want something heavy for breakfast or lunch, you go for donuts.

Mochi Donuts Are Tasteful!

These Mochi Donuts are known for the texture they have. Chewy, light, bouncy texture (the result of using tapioca flour) attracts many of us to have a bite of them. These donuts resemble our typical donuts and use classic, vanilla, and buttery dough. Once the donut from such dough is made, you can add glaze to it, giving it a final touch. Various glazes of Japanese origin are applied to it like ube, matcha, pandan, to name a few. Let’s Prepare a Mocha Donut for ourselves now, shall we?

Mocha Donut Recipe

It takes about an hour to be done with cooking. Half an hour for preparing everything and the remaining time for cooking what you prepared. So, let’s get right into it so that you can make some amazing Mochi Donuts at your home and enjoy heavenly food as a result of an amalgamation of two different food cultures.

  1. We will start by whisking the major ingredients into a bowl. (Baking powder, all-purpose flour, tapioca flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl)

  2. Take another bowl in which we will whisk some more ingredients. In this large bowl, we will take vanilla, milk, melted cheese, eggs and whisk them to make a smooth batter.

  3. Now that we have both dry and wet ingredients prepared, we will add the above-mentioned dry ingredients in wet ones in a large bowl and mix them until we get a fine, highly viscous paste for donut making.

  4. After mixing, cut out the pieces of parchment paper in a square shape. Cut out 12 pieces of 4 inches. The batter prepared above will be sufficient to make 12 Mochi Donuts.

  5. Now, we take a deep pot to boil the oil in it at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, prepare a cooling rack. Place it over a paper towel-lined baking sheet because we are baking something worth this hard work.

  6. Let the oil heat, and till then, we will transfer all the dough from the bowl into a piping bag. Now line all the paper pieces that we had cut earlier. One by one, make a circle on these papers to make a donut.

  7. After letting mochi donuts settle for a while, transfer them into the hot oil along with the parchment paper (it will be removed later). We will fry these donuts for one to two minutes until they look golden in color. Once prepared, we will leave these donuts to cool on the cooling rack that we prepared earlier.

  8. Let’s make the glaze by the time our donuts are getting cooled. To make the glaze, we will mix sugar, vanilla, milk, and half a teaspoon of matcha powder. Use a medium bowl as it won’t take much space. You can add more matcha powder as per your taste to make your donuts lighter or darker in color. Add milk along with the addition of powder to maintain the thickness of the glaze.

  9. Now, as the glaze and donuts are ready, we dip one side of a donut into the glaze we prepared. Now leave the dipped donut for a while so that the glaze becomes firm and spreads evenly. Ten minutes will be enough for the glaze to settle.

  10.  Voila! Your Mochi donuts are ready to be served. Serve them immediately, or you can store them in an airtight container and enjoy them whenever you want.
