News Synopsis

What happened in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, can never be forgotten. It can be called the deadliest man-made hazard since the existence of humans on this earth. It was the first atomic bomb attack that lead to the death of thousands and moreover, its consequences can still be seen in various deformations in the body. Sunao Tsuboi, a leading Japanese campaigner against nuclear weapons who survived the Hiroshima bombing, was on his way to college when he was caught in the blast.

He suffered burns all over his body. Some 140,000 people were killed. "Naked, I tried to run away for about three hours on August 6 but finally could no longer walk," he told AFP. Picking up a stone he wrote on the ground "Tsuboi dies here" before passing out, only waking up several weeks later. He says that he was so weak that he had to start the recovery by practicing crawling. Sadly, Sunao Tsuboi passed away yesterday at the age of 96.
