News Synopsis

YouTube apologized on Monday for improperly removing several live streams from one of the platform's most popular accounts, Lofi Girl, and promised to restore the channels within two days.

Lofi Girl claimed on Sunday that its accounts had been targeted with bogus allegations of copyright infringement, tweeting, "lofi radios have been taken down because of false copyright strikes." A screenshot of an email sent by YouTube was attached to the tweet, which stated that the "lofi hip hop radio - beats to relax/study to" and one copyright strike was added to the account. The tweet has received over 96,000 likes, demonstrating the account's enormous popularity.

Another of Lofi Girl's popular streams, "beats to sleep/chill to," was also taken down due to a bogus copyright strike. According to VICE, the channel was founded in 2015 by French musician Dmitri and is one of the longest-running live videos on YouTube.

Its most popular video, "lofi hip hop radio - beats to relax/study to," features a now-famous image of an animated woman working at a desk while listening to soothing music in the background. The account has over 10 million YouTube subscribers, and its two most popular live streams, which were removed by YouTube, have nearly 800 million total views. ChilledCow, its original name, was retired last year.
