News Synopsis

Shanghai, China's largest city, will soon begin to lift the blockade of the community that does not report positive cases within 14 days of the next round of the COVID-19 test.

The fresh round of testing comes as the city has reported approximately 23,000 more cases on Saturday. The city has been under lockdown since March 28, which lead the residents to complain about shortages of food and basic necessities.

Guangzhou authorities have also announced mass testing of its 18 million residents in the northwest city of Hong Kong. Under the new measures, areas in Shanghai will be classified as precautionary, controlled on locked down, based on the result of the latest testing round.

In controlled areas, residents can still move around in their neighbourhoods, which are smaller than districts, while areas with a lockdown will require everyone to stay at home. The country is facing one of the worst local outbreaks ever since the pandemic began.

China is still following the zero Covid policy and taking drastic measures including lockdowns and mass testing to identify and isolate every single case. The country is still closed to international travel.
