News Synopsis

Russia has increased purchases of tea from India over the past two weeks and is paying an extra price for tea. A country that is among the biggest buyers of Indian tea has led to up to 50% increase in the price of traditional tea, loose leaf tea that is produced using the traditional method. The cost of premium CTC tea have also increased by 40%, as Russia consumes the tea too.

Orthodox tea is believed to have a more multi-layered, bright and lively flavor, while CTC tea typically has more intense, faster, and extremely strong tastes, as well as bitter flavors. The conflict in Ukraine and Russia that broke out between Russia and Ukraine that began in February affected Indian tea's exports to Russia.

"The Russian market for Indian tea is extremely important as there are payment issues for shipments to Iran, another vital tea export destination. Around 18 per cent of India's tea shipments go to Russia," India Tea Association chairperson Nayantara Palchoudhuri informed.

In February, the conflict that had erupted between Russia and Ukraine had affected the sales of Indian tea to Russia. "The Russian market for Indian tea is vital since exports to Iran also a major market for exports of tea, are experiencing payment issues. As per Nayantara Palchoudhuri who is the chairwoman of the India Tea Association 18 percent of tea exports from India are sent to Russia.

Orthodox tea is loose leaf tea made using the traditional methods of plucking, rolling, withering and drying. It is known for its an aroma that is more vibrant, complex and lively.
