News Synopsis

PM Modi, in his recent speech, claimed that all the vaccination was provided free of cost. While this may appear to be true from afar, looking closely at the statement reveals something else. Yes, the government did make vaccination free but the private hospitals did charge a substantial amount for the vaccines. The prices varied from 1,000 rupees to 1,500 rupees, depending on the vaccine one was taking. This was conveniently left out by Modi in his speech to make it look like a win. In fact, the government policy itself stated clearly that 75% of total vaccines would be procured by the government and 25% will be bought by private players. These private players then went on to charge a good amount for vaccines.

Study shows that of the total vaccinated population, 6% of them have taken it from private hospitals and paid a good amount. Yes, it’s true that 10.91 crore vaccines were given for free by the government but saying that all the vaccines were available for free is misleading but the real question here is that should the government be thumping its chest for giving vaccines for free? It is after all their responsibility. The vaccination program is the sole responsibility of the government which is why it is embarrassing to see the government playing a credit game in this scenario. Everything after all becomes about winning the votes of people by claiming that they went out of their way to save people. The question here is not whether the government can or cannot take credit but whether it should?
