News Synopsis

A new species of Gecko was discovered at Goa University. It is not supposed to be rare, but the researchers said that they faced probable threats from building, and sometimes the burning of vegetation which may lead to habitat loss for the species. Hemiphyllodactylus genesis is the scientific name of Gecko.

Researchers who were working at the Zoology Department of Goa University and the Thackeray Wildlife Foundation of Mumbai discovered a Gecko who is known as one of the smallest species of that class. Gecko has a maximum length of 32mm. In addition to its small size, Gecko can also be distinguished by its 16 to 18 dorsal scales and 13 to 14 ventral scales at mid-body, that contained within one longitudinal eye diameter, as well as elusive color pattern differences.

The researchers confirmed that it was really a different species; it has the mitochondrial genetic factor, that establishes its typical identity. This species is not closely allied to the South Indian or Eastern Ghats clades of Indian Hemiphyllodactylus, but it appears to be a member of a third Indian Hemiphyllodactylus class. Gecko is the first member of this species who has the origin of the northern Western Ghats region as well as Goa state. This amazing discovery is helping scientists to expand their knowledge of Indian Geckos and extends the known distribution of the species in western India.
