News Synopsis

In an effort to model its apps after TikTok, a competitor in short-form video, Meta Platforms announced on Thursday that it was redesigning the main feed on its Facebook app to emphasize "discovery" of new content rather than posts from accounts that users follow.
In recent months, Meta executives have expressed a greater sense of urgency about promoting the company's "Reels" product, which is similar to TikTok's short video format and has drawn many younger users. According to a statement from Meta, Facebook's "Home," or default news feed tab, will start emphasizing popular posts from accounts that users do not follow, such as Reels and Stories.

Facebook said that it is investing in artificial intelligence (AI) to provide recommended content to users through its machine learning ranking system. The old method, which predominately features posts from friends, pages, and groups that users actively choose to follow, will be offered in a new separate tab called "Feeds."

According to Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook post, feeds in that tab will be presented chronologically without personalized ranking. According to Meta, the feeds will still contain advertisements but no suggested posts.

As the threat from TikTok has grown, the largest social media company in the world has switched completely to algorithmic recommendations, which is a sharp departure from its 2018 plan to prioritise posts from friends and family.
