News Synopsis

World Bank President David Malpass said the world is facing a "human catastrophe" after Russia continues its war with Ukraine. Malpas said that food prices would rise record-breaking and hundreds of millions of people would be driven into poverty and malnutrition if the war continues.

With regards to “broad and deep” price hikes, Malpass further said that the price hike was affecting food of all different kinds of oil, and grains, and then it gets into other crops, corn crops because they go up when wheat goes up.

He says the world has enough food to feed everyone and, by historical standards with the large stockpile, but getting food where it is needed requires a sharing or selling process.

Malpas also warned of the possibility of a  "crisis within a crisis" due to the inability of developing countries to handle large pandemic debt as food and energy prices soar.

A statement from the World Bank chief came out after the United Nations stated earlier this month that the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine had caused a "significant rise" in food prices, hitting a  record high in March.
