News Synopsis

Amazon Inc CEO Andy Jassy has said in his first shareholder letter that he wants to improve the worker's safety and build on the innovations that have made Amazon one of the leading tech companies today. Jassy, who became CEO from founder Jeff Bezos last summer, used the first annual speech released to address Amazon's progress on new products and services, the company's growth in the Covid 19 pandemic, and discussed new efforts to improve workers' safety.

Amazon workers were twice as seriously injured last year as non-Amazon warehouses, according to a survey released this month by Strategic Organizing Center, a coalition of four unions. Jassy took over Amazon from the company's current executive, founder Bezos. Bezos has been writing an annual letter to shareholders since the company went public in 1997. Letters often emphasized the company's performance, which was usually told in snappy storytelling. In his final letter as CEO a year ago,  Bezos also wrote about fixing Amazon's injury rate as part of a new vow to be "Earth's best employer ."

In his shareholder letter Mr. Jassy also talked about the company's efforts toward achieving its net zero carbon by 2040. He said that Amazon is committed to powering its operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025, five years ahead of the company's initial target.
